Sumant Sinha (born 12 February 1965) is an Indian businessman. He is Chairman and Managing Director of ReNew Power, which he founded in 2011. Before founding the company in 2011, he held various positions at Aditya Birla Group, Citibank, and ING Barings.


In 1983, he graduated from his school in St. He Columba, Delhi. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1987 with a Bachelor of Technology degree. In 1989, he received a Master of Business Administration degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. In 1991, after her two-year stint with Tata Public Service, Sumanto received a master’s degree in international finance from the Graduate School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is also a CFA Charterholder and a member of the Institute.


Sumant Sinha started his career in 1989 with his two years at Tata Administrative Services. After graduating from Columbia University, Sumant Sinha worked as an investment banker at Citicorp Securities and his ING Barings in the US and UK respectively. Sumant returned to India in 2002 to become Chief Financial Officer of Aditya Birla Group, India’s third-largest conglomerate. As CFO, Aditya Birla Group acquired his Ultratech Cement, Novelis and Idea Cellular. Sumanto was also instrumental in founding Aditya Birla Retail Limited, the retail arm of the Aditya Birla Group, where 2007 he served as Chief Executive Officer until 2008.


He then joined Suzlon Energy in 2008 as Chief Operating Officer of one of India’s largest wind energy companies. He worked for Suzlon for the next 15 months, helping to weather the 2008 financial crisis. In 2011, he founded ReNew Power, an independent renewable energy producer headquartered in Gurgaon.
Sumant said he founded ReNew Power in 2011 and by 2015 he plans to have at least 1000MW of capacity. In March 2014, ReNew Power won its first solar energy tender, his 57.6 MW project in Madhya Pradesh. Sumant led his ReNew Power from its inception, growing its commissioned capacity from 0 to 5,800 MW in six years, making him one of India’s largest independent renewable energy producers. In 2017, the company’s stock was valued at $2 billion. In 2016, Sumant established the “Suman Sinha ReNew Center of Excellence for Energy and Environment” at IIT Delhi.
